The submitted images are part of “Captured by the Sea,” an evolving body of work documenting sun-seekers at the beach in Italy and France. A play-on-words, the title of this series communicates the state of mind of my subjects, as well as the act of my photographing them. When I create these images, I work as an invisible observer of the people and landscape unfolding around me. As I look through the viewfinder of my camera, I turn down the imaginary volume dial in my brain and quietly study the scene. Every detail has significance, from colors and textures, to facial expressions and body language. It is the juxtaposition of these details in the foreground, mid-ground, and background of the photograph that lends an otherwise unremarkable scene a surreal, dreamlike quality. My goal is to create photographs with enough detail and content that they encourage curiosity and provoke a creative narrative within the viewer. Does she know she’s catching a sunburn? Are they lifetime lovers, or getting fresh for the first time? Do the lifeguards watch the children or their mothers? Are the lone sunbathers seeking solitude or the chance of meeting someone in the surf? Are they too, captured by the sea?
Jessica is also a fine art digital printer. When she takes a photograph, she will only bring it to life if she is able to evoke the same emotion in the print that inspired her to capture the image. Jessica’s work is best viewed in large-scale displays where the simplicity of a quiet landscape can achieve the drama of a grand scene. Jessica’s photographs are printed and sold in limited edition using only the finest archival papers and inks.

About author:
Jessica Cantlin is a fine art landscape photographer from Seattle, Washington. Jessica’s photographs capture the quiet landscape that exists where people and nature intersect with the environment. Through the lens, she photographs the tranquility of the natural world, and is drawn to moods created by water, weather, and natural light. Jessica’s work is also that of a storyteller. Every place and person that she photographs has a story. She is a discrete observer who creates images that translate that story and transport the viewer to another place and slice of time that may never be captured in the same light again.Jessica is also a fine art digital printer. When she takes a photograph, she will only bring it to life if she is able to evoke the same emotion in the print that inspired her to capture the image. Jessica’s work is best viewed in large-scale displays where the simplicity of a quiet landscape can achieve the drama of a grand scene.
