This photographic story is based on a myth of Aght’amar Island which is located in lake Van, Turkey.
The name given to the island, Aght’amar, is explained by a local Armenian legend HovHannes Tomanian. The story is about a nobleman who fell in love with a beautiful girl name Tamar, the daughter of the priest at the Armenian holy church located in that island. He was crossing to the island everynight to see his love Tamar. One stormy night the boy lots his way and he drowned uttering the words ‘Ah Tamar’. Tamar waited for him and seek for him everyday but couln’t find him. Hence, the island was called ‘Aght’amar’ ever since.
“Into the moonlit waters of the lake of Van/From the shores of a tiny hamlet/Enters the water as thief in the night/ each and every night a lad (...) At dawn the calm water floats in/Upon the shore it leaves a corpse/On his stiffened and frozen lips/Perhaps you’d say at time of death/Frozen were two words, Ah Tamar!” H.Toumanian
