These are photos taken at Sloane Square tube station in London above ground of commuters who have just emerged from the dark disorientation of the subway network, and who, in so doing, strive to reconnect with the world on the surface. I believe it is in moments like these--moments of indecision, of taking one's bearings against the world--when a window is opened up to the photographer and we are allowed to capture something unscripted, deeper and more meaningful.

For my 60 birthday my husband gave me a second hand Nikon camera, and my daughter followed this up with a 5-day beginners' photography course. Suffice it to say that I was smitten: over the next week I embarked on a treasure hunt like the ones I used to love as a child--except in this one I collected stories and captured emotions with the click of my shutter. If I was in awe then at the possibility of interacting with the world in this new way, I am even more so now, four years later, at the age of 64.BACK TO GALLERY
