For many, living in Hong Kong means a monotonous life dictated by long and grueling work hours. In 2009, I decided to take a break and left a job I loved. I started walking around town everyday with a camera to discover if this city has anything left to offer.
I reminded myself to stay away from familiar paths and destinations. My daily photo walks resembled more like aimless wandering. A sense of unknown always led to anticipation and angst. I wasn’t sure what I was after, and awaited new ideas and feelings to spring from the surroundings.
Everywhere I went, strangers brushed shoulders with me. They are anonymous faces we see thousand times a day without second thoughts. But when observed closer, their expressions and gestures remind me of my own being: Feelings of love, hope, desire, frustration…etc. These are little moments that characterize our life's existence. This is the beauty of Hong Kong.
By looking outward through my camera’s viewfinder, I understood more about myself.
Hong Kong is where I belong.
