For as long as time, human conceptions of domestication have revolved around notions of the home and housework. Those activities include, among others, cooking, cleaning and child care. Traditionally, they have been seen as the province of women and, despite lip service to notions of the glory of sacrifice and the comforting warmth of the hearth, are rarely appreciated for their innate beauty. Instead, they are viewed more as a means or reflection of suppression and even enslavement. This series of photographs is intended to reflect the dual characteristics of domestic work: its beauty and it restraining qualities. The pictures rely on vivid colors and show lush fruits to represent the inherent beauty of domestic efforts. These images are overlaid against grids and verticals to conjure up the metaphor of bars or cages, reflective of the restraining tendency and conceptions of domestic work.
