The fear for darkness is deeply rooted in the human soul. We associate gloom with threat and danger and we are vigilant against everything that is covered in shadows.
But the moment when night turns into day, can also be associated with a certain romantic beauty, that contrasts to the afore-mentioned fear.
The lights of the night can turn a place into something new. A closer look on unimposing houses or street corners reveals the unnoticed secret that hides behind the obvious. Deserted and abandoned, partially immersed by the shadows of the darkness, these places show us their new face.
Sporadically illuminated windows and street lamps in murky alleys are hints for the the untold stories of the night. The bright neon lights and the bare bulbs keep away the darkness until morning comes and reveals all the details again.
My series “Between The Light” shows photographs of San Francisco during night. The required long exposures reveal the details of the shadows, convey the beauty of the night by illuminating the dark shadows of the obscured and unnoticed hidden corners. The series concentrates on the lights of a city and shines a light on the often hidden and ordinary places.

About author:
After my graduation from Lufthansa Flight Training School in Bremen, I started flying for Lufthansa German Airlines. Today I share my life between my passion for photography and my job as a pilot. Being able to visit places on earth on a regular basis, caught my interest in documenting the world around me. The work that I am presenting is mostly grouped in series that cover a certain idea or topic often based on a specific place in the world. The preferred medium for my photographic work is analog film, which most honestly translates my mental vision to the final image.BACK TO GALLERY
