This is your Cyprus: The small scale beauty of the vast and unexpected

Through my long term project ‘This is your Cyprus’ (2012 - to date), I have taken on the challenge of communicating a personal visual account of my homeland. The Cypriot countryside hides a uniqueness and a small-scale beauty that require an attentive look to be truly noticed and valued. The island’s small size, coupled with the seemingly unthreatening, tame and giving character that defines the Mediterranean environment, often tricks us into setting nature aside and separating it from ourselves, and into forgetting both its natural landscape and its heritage. This body of work attempts to show Cyprus not just as another 'holiday' island, but as more vast and unexpected while trying to convey the importance and ‘value’ of these aspects which are often overlooked.
All of the images of this project are in black and white, which for me is essential as I feel that it removes the literal and leaves a more symbolic interpretation, allowing each image to depict the different aspects of the island's rich characteristics rather than identifiable locations.
I truly believe that however small, predictable and saturated one may perceive a place to be, there is always more exploring to do; and by taking a step or two beyond our everyday patterns, one understands that it is our own choices which create the limits we sense, and not the physical boundaries of an island.
