After moving to North Florida 8 years ago, before I found photography, I was struck by the intensity of nature within our coastal ecosystem. Here, Darwinian forces seem very hard at work. When flowers bloom, thousands of butterflies appear only to be gone days later when the blooms wither. After a storm, yards of shoreline are completely remodeled to reveal exposed root structures in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Small fractions of sprouting trees and plants unimaginably survive the harshness of water and wind that strive to unearth them. Death and rebirth are played out daily at multiple levels. Strength and perseverance are personified in both microscopic and macroscopic spheres. 

Three years ago I began attempting to capture this environment through photography. My previous esthetic background is in music as a jazz pianist and as an admirer of the painters, particularly masters of color such as Mark Rothko and Josef Albers. This past study has uncharacteristically shaped my approach to photography, as my awareness of modern photographers was nonexistent in those first years. From the mathematical aspects of music I became drawn to simple shapes and geometry playing between balance and dissonance. My admiration of painting leads my eye naturally towards simple or complementary colored compositions.
