Being born and brought up in Singapore, also known as the Garden City, I’ve seen plenty of green, but never had any chance to experience nature beyond contained nature reserves or gardens. But that changed when I travelled to Alaska for a field trip. I was thoroughly impressed by the grandeur of nature around me.

“Transition” is a photo series, where I celebrate my newfound love for nature and explore my connectedness with it, gradually becoming more in sync with my surroundings as I try to capture what is around me.

Using the self as a canvas, it depicts the analogy of transition from the fast-paced tension of being in the city, and then transitioning into the serenity of nature. This is also done through an abstract expression, as the photos gradually morph from a monotonous black and white tone and then bursting into splashes of colors.

This project is one that is close to my heart, as it reinforced my beliefs in capturing the connectivity between subjects despite it being intangible. It is definitely one of the major milestones in my journey here in New York Film Academy, as I document my development from being a mere assistant to a professional photographer.

About author:

Most of the time, we all have a little creative in us. Some times, we can get crazy too. Having worked as a graphic designer previously before becoming a full-time photographer, Nicky has constantly worked to convey all of that - after all, what's life without a little crazy?

Nicky took the plunge to become a photographer, started off as a photography assistant. She travelled all the way from Singapore to New York. Having been based here for a year or so has opened many doors for her and allowed her to think about life from different perspectives.

Through her experiences, and armed with a zest for converting the endless amount of these ideas into photography. Having graduated from the art college and being a fan of Wong Kar Wai's movies, her work is heavily influenced by baroque paintings and notion of narratives with cinematic techniques.

Nicky was born in Singapore,
based in New York,
but always on the road.
