At the night of 8th Feburary 2016, the first day of the Chinese New Year Holiday in Hong Kong, a crackdown on unlicensed street hawkers by the police in the midnight had escalated into clashes between the police and the protesters on the streets. Protesters threw bricks and glass bottles and set fire, while batons and pepper spray were used by the police. It is believed to be one of the most violent incidents in the last few decades in the city.
