Hip-Hop in the south has taken on a life of its own in the last decade. With Outkast's memorial line "The South's got something to say" in 1995 the scene has only grown and at this point serves as the hub for the entire industry. In my project "C-Port" I aimed to understand why, when hip-hop has become so prevolant in the media today, that Savannah, GA seemed to have so little to say. What I found was a subculture that hardly permiated what most people know as Savannah and instead operated on the outskirts of a city i've come to call home. In documenting the shows, neighborhoods, and characters that make up the scene I came to realize that the south may have something to say but more importantly, Hip-Hop was the only tool that many people had to say anything at all. A wholly unrecognized subculture in a city that should have a thriving scene.

About author:
A photographer from Cape Elizabeth, ME, I have spent the last few years developing methods of story telling with my lens. In my practices I have found myself drawn to what makes americans just that and how subcultures come to contribute to the larger whole.BACK TO GALLERY
