Although Bangladesh is one of the few Muslim countries in the world that doesn't make prostitution as a livelihood is illegal, it strongly remains taboo. There are around 1000 female sex workers in Tangail, one of the oldest red light areas in the country. Underage girls can earn as much as 10 times than twenties and over. The majority of the sex workers are victims of poverty, kidnapping, or trafficking. Once they enter the brothel, they can not escape due to debt, social prejudice, and lack of education. Even they finish paying debt or just simply became too old to make profits, they have nowhere to go because of fear of social exclusion in the conservative Muslim society. And most girls who are born in brothels have follow her mother as a sex worker and painful cycle continues.
