These images are part of an ongoing book/exhibition project of nudes on the wilderness shores of Utah's Lake Powell, in the United States. They reflect both my desire to allow the viewer a more intimate connection to the landscape, as well as expressing my personal emotions following a near-death accident in 2014.
Following a near-death experience in 2014, Blacklock found himself needing to express an upwelling of feelings of vulnerability, gratefulness, love, longing, triumph, and mourning. These themes became the prominent weft threads woven over the supporting warp of the landscape.
Blacklock’s photography continues the evolution of the nude within the landscape. It builds upon the heroic nature-feminist statements, and high emotions expressed in the Pictorialist works of Anne Brigman and the bold, straight photography style of Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston and other members of Group f/64.
Like Brigman, Blacklock endeavors to generate visual, tactile, and emotional connections between the viewer, and landscape — expressing not only what he saw, but much more importantly, what he deeply felt.
Thirty years of large format film, and wet darkroom work disciplined and honed Blacklock’s vision and technique. During those decades, he worked with virtually the same constraints and technology as members of Group f/64. Now, digital photography’s speed, and ability to reproduce incredible detail with a large dynamic range provides him ever-expanding boundaries within which to create his photographs, and an ability to reproduce them with a fidelity and scale never dreamed of in pre-digital times.
With the “nudes” genre dominated by studio and fashion photographers, Blacklock’s background as a fine art landscape photographer sets his work apart from the crowd.
Blacklock has photographed 17 books. His work has been featured in solo museum exhibitions, numerous international photography magazines, won many awards, and is in private and public collections in the U.S. and Europe.

Craig Blacklock’s photographs are noted for technically perfect, impeccably clean compositions, which create a visual and emotional fusion of the nude and landscape. As an environmentally concerned wilderness photographer, landscapes dominate Blacklock’s vision; the figure provides the viewer a portal into these places he loves, and wishes to help preserve.Following a near-death experience in 2014, Blacklock found himself needing to express an upwelling of feelings of vulnerability, gratefulness, love, longing, triumph, and mourning.
