White-winged Black Tern (Chlidonias leucopterus)
Lake Wollumboola, NSW, Australia
7 February 2016
Terns sometimes execute a quick corkscrew twist in mid-flight to shake off excess water. This shot was taken while lying at the edge of a shallow lake separated from the sea by a sandbar. A number of terns were bathing in the shallow water of the lake. I captured this shot as one tern launched into the air, giving itself a quick shake in mid-air. Canon 5D Mark III, EF600mm IS II USM + 1.4X, 1/2500, f/8, ISO 640, handheld with beanbag support.

About author:
I am a wildlife photographer based in Sydney, Australia. My main passion is photographing Australian birds. Fortunately, Australia has an incredible diversity of birdlife as well as other fauna so there is much to choose from. It is a privilege to encounter birds and animals that are new to me and each day is an adventure. I am happiest when I can spend time by the sea, at a wetland or in the Australian bush in search of a great shot!BACK TO GALLERY
