For Chinese folk worldwide, the Lunar New Year is a time to usher in new beginnings, rejoice with loved ones, and honour age-old traditions. Also known as the Spring Festival, it is celebrated with much fanfare in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of George Town, Penang - where there are 15 days of non-stop revelry. One can catch breathtaking lion dance on stilts displays, soak up the rich culture at vibrant street parades, or be enchanted by the graceful movements of traditional folk dances. The skills of Chingay practitioners, who catch and balance giant flag poles on their heads, never fails to excite. And all throughout, children have a fun time dressing up and playing with firecrackers. Festivities end with a bang through brilliant fireworks displays that echo well into the night. Those visiting the historic city during this festive period are assured of a cultural experience unlike any other!
