On the 22nd of January 2005 the non-identical twins Lorca Sebastian and Emily Carmen were born. Emily was diagnosed with Down's Syndrome the following day. As a photographer and father I started documenting Emily's life form the early times full of uncertainties to the spell-bounding progress she has made and the raw charm Emily selflessly gives any one she encounters.
People with Down’s Syndrome are now much more part of society but there is a long way to go. I the viewer can see these images where Emily is portrayed candidly as a young girl full of dreams, aspirations, wants, needs, likes and dislike...just like anyone else. I hope through these images we can see Emily an individual, rather than just a girl with Down’s syndrome.
Down's syndrome or Trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21.
