My home town of Sydney has a wonderful, geological heritage, a massive area of sedimentary sandstone known as the Sydney Basin. Quarried since European settlement, we construct our buildings and basements from it. Enormous cutting discs are used to excavate the stone leaving ridges and furrows. The stone’s porosity allows moisture to seep through and due to the lack of bleaching sunlight; layers of algae and other microbial elements can build up exquisite patterns.
These algae covered walls, like beautiful natural murals can go unnoticed.
This became a catalyst in searching out how Nature transforms our ‘Man Made Mark’ – our excavations, our buildings, our discarded vehicles, our storage containers and rubbish bins. These become beautiful, as natural decay, oxidation and weathering turn dismissed material objects into Nature’s Paintings. I love these patterns and textures and by focusing in and isolating these subjects from their surroundings I can expose what natural beauty is there, if only we take the time to look.
